The pestle and mortar indicated the presence of an apothecary, or pharmacy. A pharmacy has occupied these premises since 1882 when the building was completed and retains the original sign alongside the more familiar green cross.
The green cross is a registered service mark of The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
