Spiders?

I saw some dirt at the base of a small lamp on a window sill, looking closer i realized it was hundreds of dead and dried tiny spiders. It looks like they captured a couple of fruit flies before they succumbed. I was surprised because i thought that spiders in close confinement would be cannibalistic until only a few larger ones remained. Maybe the cold window sill kept them torpid until they freeze dried
