Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Young girl with old creel.

This photograph was taken on the banks of the estuary of the river Ythan at Newburgh. Our grand-daughter Jasmine, aged 6, is wearing a child's fish creel. The creel, a detailed and authentic miniature, had been made, in around 1918 in Peterhead, for her great grand-mother, Christina, for use in a Christmas play.

The Ythan estuary is a fitting location for such a photograph. In the early part of the 20th century women from local fishing communities would walk to the estuary to load up their creels with mussels, Mytilis edulis, to be used as fish bait on the long lines used at that time.
