The middle of nowhere

I have just returned from an extremely long day in the middle of nowhere. Well, more specifically, it was one of the oil fields over a hundred miles into the desert past Abu Dhabi to the edge of Rub al Khali (the Empty Quarter). This is one of the largest deserts in the world at 1,000km long and 500km wide. The desert scenery of endless crescent dunes is quite magnificent, although not so hospitable during the sandstorm on the way home. This is very much one of those days when I'm glad to be safely home.
