Lefty Johnson's slide guitar solos could melt the ashtrays in Memphis barrooms; he'd heat up crowds like a run-away blast furnace. Lefty bent notes like a blacksmith. Not bad for a man with one arm. He would slip the unusually large and shiny slide onto his stumped forearm and make it move over the neck of his Gibson like a fevered cat. So smooth. So nasty.
It was the custom that four pizzas would be delivered to the hotel room after every gig. Bourbon, beer and anchovies. The band always waited for Lefty to remove the first slice from the perfectly round pie. While holding the wedge he'd look down and announce that, "Pi are square." This was followed quickly by the drummer's response, "No Lefty, Pi are round. Cornbread are square." Then they would eat.
