Ancient Ruins

The ancient town of Herculaneum is in the area of Pompeii, and was destroyed by the same volcano. It's smaller than Pompeii, although better preserved and less packed with tourists. Unfortunately the area it's in has suffered some economic problems, which probably hasn't helped the conservation efforts.

Amazingly you can visit almost all areas of the town, including walking over the roman mosaic floors.
