Approaches seminar - Art and Gender

Today we were discussing how art history has always been male dominated, with all the most famous artists having been male. In effect, until second wave feminism in the 1970's, women have been 'written out' of art history. Four of many under-estimated influential female artists (why do I have to qualify this?) include Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot (Impressionism) and later Frida Kahlo (Surrealism) and Kathe Kollwitz(Expressionism).
