Supermoon
Today's the day ...................... to look at the night sky
Have you seen the moon tonight? It's enormous! - and that's because it is a Supermoon. The moon sometimes gets closer to Earth than at other times which causes it to appear much larger. Tomorrow night - March 19, 2011 - will be the closest it has been to Earth since 1992. But tomorrow the night sky is likely to be cloudy - so go and have a look tonight just in case.
There is a conspiracy theory that Supermoons are related to massive earthquakes and tsunamis. This however has not been proven but they have been shown to cause increased tides because of their gravitational pull. When the Moon is closest to Earth, it is said to be at its perigee. When it is at the farthest distance from Earth, it is at its apogee.
The next time there is a Supermoon will be on November 14, 2016........
