Isabel Maxwel
I've passed the old Strathmartine graveyard in Bridgefoot many times, but only stopped and looked for the first time on Friday. Some interesting old graves there so I'm sure this won't be the last I blip.
The sun chose the time I was there to stop shining (well, obviously not, but a cloud got in the way) so the inscription doesn't show us as well as it might, but it says
HERe LYES ISABEL MAXWEL
DAUGhTeR TO GEORGe MA
XUEL WhO DEPERTED ThIS
LIFE THE 9 DAY OF DECE
MBER 1720 & OF HER
AGE 4 YEARS
Makes you stop and think. I don't believe in praying for the dead so I pray for all the Isabel Maxwells of today, children all over the world whose lives are far too short; and all the George Maxwells losing the children they love. And I wonder about Geroge's wife, Isabel's mother - had she died already or was she not considered worthy of mention?
