Hyacinth in the rain

I love hyacinths. I love the way they smell. I love the blue ones the most. So a couple of weeks ago I splurged and bought myself a pot of them, watered them carefully, watched them slowly grow and open.

Last week my son came into the kitchen and complained about the sick smell, like something rotting or dead. So we emptied the garbage, lectured about wrapping up meat containers and took out the compost for good measure.

A few days later he was still complaining. I don't keep the cleanest house, but it doesn't smell that bad. Then we realized -- the smell was my lovely hyacinths filling up the house with the scent of spring.

Well, what can you do? The hyacinths went outside and sit on my back porch. The house doesn't smell like spring anymore.

But all is not lost. This morning they were covered in tiny drops of water from the overnight rain - perfect blip fodder!
