Here's a little tip - if you hold a remote up to your mobile camera, you can see the infrared signal. Handy way of seeing if the battery is dead, or the remote is broken.

I remember reading about an art exhibition where you viewed the exhibits using your mobile, based on this concept, but I can't find a link.
