Helter-skelter

Totem pole.

Here is one of the musical totem poles I mentioned yesterday. There are three and each one is made of a different type of wood (this is from a redwood tree) and the carvings tell what I suppose you'd call a 'woodland fable' about their particular tree. Another one has a big bear and some raccoons carved in it and the third has alligators. They're in a lovely, peaceful setting and once again looked great today in the sunlight. Unfortunately I can't remember this one's story but I know it ends with a salmon!

The idea is that if you hit different parts of the wood you get different sounds so you can make 'music'. For this one you use your hands but the other two have wooden sticks to use - far from being untouchable, children will be actively encouraged to bash them to their heart's content. There is also an 'acoustic chair' you can sit in (well, it's child-size really but I just about managed to wedge myself in!) and it's a bit like being inside a seashell and hearing the ocean. Oh, and there's a turkey you can sit on.

Hopefully these will encourage people to venture further into the grounds or, even better, they will stumble across a nice surprise by accident!
