Breakthrough
For a moment, Adam froze, unbelieving. He didn't dare to hope that what he was seeing was real.
But sure enough, from where his hands had gone through the wall, he could feel a faint draught of cooler air.
Hewson, unable to see clearly what had happened, was asking what was going on - and it was the repetition of his name that finally got Adam's attention.
"There's a gap here," he said. "They'd just plasterboarded over it I think. It's gone all soft with the damp."
He started working around the hole he'd made, pulling at the crumbling material, making the gap bigger. Soon it was big enough for him to push his head through, and after doing so he pulled it back quickly, turning to Hewson.
"Come on. give me a hand with this. There's a corridor on the other side of here. If we can make a big enough hole we can get out of this place."
