For those following the House of Doom...
Here it is,the well of death and of water of course....
I have done my homework on this...it was built to supply spring water to Clopton House, just next to it is a small stone with just the date 1686 on it,no one is exactly sure but it is thought to be the date Sir John Clopton died ?? I have never noticed the stone before but it looks as if the general area has had a tidy recently.
There is also a fading plaque which tells you the well is called 'Margarets Well' she drowned in it in the year 1592 in a temper, something to do with not being allowed to marry a the man she loved .... it is thought that around this time Shakespeare was writing Hamlet and that this tragic event might have provided him with the inspiration for the character of Ophelia and her lonely death .
A nice little aside here. MARKS AND SPENCERS provided the fencing in 2003 to stop the cows that graze on the Clopton estate causing any more damage... it's not just a fence..... its a M&S fence.Just so you know.
I have a little treat (hahahahha I am laughing at myself now ) on the link, one is a photo of the 'stone' one is a closer view of the evil well and one is Marley with the smallest stick he could find today......
Stone,blahh ballllahh blah
