In The Occupied Territory

All day and all of the night

Before there wer 24 hour petrol stations that sold stuff other than petrol and cigarettes, before there were 24/7 superstores, before ther were the multitude of all night services; there was this 365 days of the year. 24 hours of the day, corner shop.
It's prices were high, sometimes ridiculously so, it's staff not at all customer friendly and it's choice of goods limited. But for years it was the only one.
I remember a story told to me about it.
It used to have flowers for sale outside the store front, and one evening there was this guy, who had had a few beers, (shall we say ? ) was walking past the front of the shop carrying a bunch of flowers, presumably as peace offering for his wife. He had purchased thhe flowers from a flower shop about a hundred yards or so further down the road.
The owner of the 24 hour shop, just happen to look out of the door and see said gentleman passing buy carrying the aforementioned floral arrangement, and presumed that he had stolen them from the containers outside his premises. So without asking any questions, he charged out of the store and attacked the innocent drunk with a baseball bat.
