Pastelaria Versailles, Lisbon

When Sonia, the Portuguese interpreter for our class, found out that I was a keen baker, she brought me a little box of goodies one morning. They were unbelievably good. I didn't want to share them with the others, but I did - reluctantly. When I asked her where they came from, she took me here. The Pastelaria Versailles, the queen of Lisbon tea rooms, has been around since 1922. I loved its elegant interior and smartly-dressed waiters. The food is classic Portuguese cooking, and very good it was too.

The best part of Versailles for me? A 30 meter long glass display counter with a jaw-dropping range of sweet and savoury pastries and confectionery. Guess who brought back a kilo of them, hand-carried, no less. Mea culpa.
