Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Primus inter pares

Today is too cold, wet and windy for much outdoor photography and I have had to resort to bring a bit of the garden indoors.

The Drumstick or Himalayan primrose Primula denticulata grows wild in moist alpine regions from Afghanistan to China but has been in cultivation since the early 1800s.

The primulas are some of the first plants to flower in the Spring which accounts for their generic name of Primula which apparently is derived from the Latin word primus, which means first. I knew that my O level Latin (failed) would come in useful one day!

Primula flowers are said to be edible and to make a very attractive, but not particularly filling, addition to salads.
