Ice
This lady is chopping up the ice.Ice is made in the ice factory. They are big noisy places and there is one in every town and village. I don't know where our local one is but it will be tucked away somewhere. Most people don't have refridgerators here so things such as food, drinks and drugs that need to be kept cold are put into big ice boxes, which are usually red, and then packed with ice. This is an effective way of keeping things cold but labour intensive. The ice melts quickly so needs to be replaced two or three times a day and everything has to be well wrapped in watertight bags or put in containers so that it doesn't get spoilt. Also the water from the melted ice has to be got rid of which usually means getting all your stuff out, bailing out the water and then putting everything back. The ice is usually carted from the ice factory to the shops by a horse and cart. It is wrapped in sacking and is usually covered in sawdust. The shopowner then cuts it into useable sizes where it is then stored and sold on to the customers.
