Fabulous Fifties
These are some of the beautiful dresses on show at the Fabulous Fifties talk I went to this evening. The talks are essentially social history as demonstrated by what women were wearing.
I felt quite young tonight - there was much reminiscing about liberty bodices and gym knickers - neither of which featured in my growing up in the 1960s. The History Wardrobe presenters don't have any originals of these items - apparently you can buy them on Ebay but they go for huge sums as they are classed as Fetish wear!
I did recognise some of the frilly net petticoats - we had some in our dressing up box - must have been my mum's. I didn't know that the large long bloomers with elasticated legs were called harvest festivals (because all was safely gathered in!).
The swiming costumes, playsuits, stays and bras were interesting - hadn't realised that wiring was put vertically across the bust rather than under as now. Apparently it gave you the sexy pyramid bust look when you wore your tight jumper.
A fun evening - must try and book for their new talk on the Titanic.
A better day at work. Managed a quick lunchtime walk and saw two fighting pheasants, a fox and three deer (in 2 separate fields).
