A closer look at the castle
I had things to do in central Uppsala today, and since the light was so brilliant, I thought I'd give you blippers a closer look at the castle.
This is the southeastern tower in glorious morning light. The castle was built as a fortress by the Vasa dynasty during the 16th century, on top of the hill Kasåsen, looking down at and dominating the huge cathedral with it's 118 m towers, and the town.
You can see it as a symbol of the Swedish king's victory over the Catholic church. Ironically, it was here Queen Christina abdicated from the throne 1654 and announced that she will convert to Catholicism and move to Rome. Her dad, King Gustav II Adolf spent most of his life in Central Europe chopping catholics to bits...
