Be Mine
Sentiments from my childhood... This photo of a dear and funny neighbor is symbolic of today and the joy I find in people. She finds a heart somehow, somewhere, every day, unless, of course, she has to make do with hearts stashed from earlier successful heart days, to remind her of her late husband who gave her hearts of every kind. It's obvious she grieves for him, but she has a happy nature.
Just today upon catching a friend and me in conversation, she asked, "Is this a sorority meeting and can I join in?" She didn't attend college, but she has a positive sorority appeal, a vivacious personality. After discussing her plans to make chocolate candy with her grandsons she reflected on the subject of fruitcake.
"Do you like fruitcake?"
Well, I had to admit I do like it, once in a decade.
"I feel sorry for those who don't like fruitcake. It's terrible... people shooting it out of cannons. We used to hide it and bring it out only after the kids had gone to bed so we could eat it."
Why hide it?
"I don't know, I guess we didn't need to since the kids didn't like it. Alice (her friend in Texas) used to say 'a drop of liquor and you're headed straight to hell,' but she sure soaked her fruitcake."
Happy Fruitcake Day to all and may you have it any way you like it. Happy People Day is the day I like to celebrate.
