Bull Island

Growing up not far from this part of Dublin, a lot of youthful days were spent hanging around the beach. The Bull Island is cherished by Dubliners, especially Northsider's. Popular with walkers,windsurfers,runners,lovers, a really valuable amenity.

The Bull Island started to appear a couple of hundred years ago when the North & South walls were built to help keep the River Liffey clear of silt and improve access to Dublin Port.

It is UN protected, being the only biosphere worldwide within one mile of a city centre. A favourite wintering ground for wading birds and geese, it attracts occasional rare species. A really good interpretative centre sits within the dunes.

The two chimneys in the distance "known to us as The Pidgeon House" are a familiar and cherished part of the Dublin landscape. The ESB are planning to demolish the chimneys, however Dubliner's want them to stay.
