Hundy Mundy (1726)
I stumbled across this folly today. It was quite remarkable. Designed and built by William Adam as part of the Mellerstain Estate in the Borders, the archway is built from the remains of a tower house where a Pictish princess named Hunimundias was alleged to have resided. It sits in a small woodland in the middle of fields on high ground overlooking the Eildon and Cheviot hills.
The woodland today is used as a Natural Burial ground and there was evidence of this in the odd bunch of flowers and very discreet grave markings.
The folly is so called because the estate owner's children could not pronounce the word 'Hunimundias'.
