Eye, eye...

Bethany had her pre-school eye screening test today. We toddled up to the hospital to get seen by a lovely doctor/nurse who ran Bethany through the tests. I was wondering how it would be done for under 5s who obviously can't use the traditional methods.

This is Bethany being checked for the 3d spatial vision. Of the 4 blue pattern section of this 1cm thick perspex, one has part of the the pattern printed on the opposite side which only visibly pops up when both eyes are processing correct angles of the view. If you look at it with only one eye. The whole thing looks flat.

For the single eye vision test, they covered one eye and Bethany held a card to which she had to point to the letters as the nurse pointed them out on smaller and smaller cards from a distance.

She did perfectly on the right eye which is why it was such a surprise that she was having trouble with the left. She either got them wrong or was trying to tilt her head to either try and focus properly or see out the side of the covered eye. She's now got an appointment with the optician next week to get a proper eye test.

Thank goodness for the NHS for picking this up so early and effectively. On that note, why not head on over to DrCraig's journal for a very eloquent explanation of the NHS reforms that are trying to be put into place and why you might want to show support.
