time for an update?

i've been looking to getting myself a 50mm prime lens lately,
and i'm a bit stuck on f-stops.

the ones available to my area (and price range!) are the 1.4 usm & the 1.8 II, and besides what canon and some review sites have told me, i'm no different from a lost sheep haha.

i'd like some input, blip community -- what are the differences, really? is it worth getting the 1.4 over the 1.8/vice versa?
