Dive! Dive! Dive!
Had a really nice walk into Bath along the canal.
But really shocked to see a submarine surfacing at Pultney Weir!
It disappeared very quickly and you could see it just below the surface going back down the river. There was a lot of excitement around. The police were buzzing around with sirens blaring.
Turns out it is the famous lost sub from World War II.
In March 1945 at the end of the war a Russian sub managed to sneek up the Thames undetected. The Russians were scared we were going to pal up with the Yanks and attack them. They wanted to infiltrate our country in preparation for hostilities. The sub negotiated the rivers and canals of Britain, eventually getting lost deep in the countryside. It has been spotted a few times over the intervening decades.
But here it was today! Hundreds of people were on the bank as Bath were playing at home at the adjacent rugby ground.
I just grabbed my camera and snapped befor it dived. They reckon the five or six man crew must now be in their eighties and some will have died over the years. I assume they don`t know the war is over.
Just glad I had me camera ready.
