Old Florida #3 - Bayside House
My friend, Cynthia Edmonds, is in town painting for a plein air art event. See yesterday's blip for more details.
This old two story beach cottage on Anna Maria Island is the subject of her second painting. You'll see both completed paintings in tomorrow's blip ;-0
Along with several others in the neighborhood (5th, 6th and 7th Streets and Gulf Drive) this house was pounded by the hurricane of 1921. These houses were swept by the sea and partly submerged. Eventually they were moved to safer ground, towed by a Model T automobile! If only the walls could talk ......... nearly 100 years of history. Additional photos here.
Next day edit - I realize I should have clarified that this house and others are not situated right on the ocean., but ar closer to the bay side of the island. At this particular spot, the island is only about 200 yards wide. Everything is paved now, but in the early days, these houses would have not been separated from Gulf access by a road as they are now.
