jackie
this is Jackie Hall. she makes up a large (in many ways) part of the unique outfit Robinson Hall, a band we saw play tonight. she called the audience bitches, motherfuckers, and flipped me the bird when I took her picture. and she sings like someone that has something to say. she has a soul and she is not afraid to flaunt it, to shove it in your face. and she dresses to the nines. but i love folks like this, folks that can be loud and offensive and not care about the repercussions; all of this but can exhibit the delicate side of artistic expression and creation too. after their set, i went and thanked her for being such a badass and she was really sweet, shook my hand, and thanked me in return. she could barely talk, she'd sang her heart out through her throat and into the air for all of us, losing her speech in exchange, for probably the rest of the night.
so the band opened with a song that had the lyrics "she puts the lotion on her skin, or else she gets the fucking hose again." so, even after Jackie's opening harangues, I knew this was going to be good. by the time they got to their catchy number "Booty for Breakfast" ("i wanna bite your cinnamon roll and put cream filling in all your holes"), i was enamored. you can't make this stuff up people. the last song, though, is what sealed the deal. they took it back home with some smooth, sensual saxophone and Jackie eased in with something akin to Sade, the kind of buttery voice that makes you really forget about things like debt and traffic and genocide.
but to step back. Leah's cousin Jen was in town from Seattle on business and was staying over in Dallas. we braved the concrete chaos of highways that weave like neuronal filaments to get there. saw a few bands at this showcase that was over at the UT Dallas then went and ate Fuzzy's Tacos. Jen and her friend Brandon are coming over to our neck of the woods tomorrow for the Main Street Art Festival, so we will get to hang again. there really is more to say about today (Bicycle Friendly Fort Worth ride to the IMAX) but i am exhausted. this is good, though, because i need to get my rest so i can wake up early to enjoy a nice Sunday booty for breakfast.
