Treasure trove
I know it doesn't look like much but I was thrilled to find it. Although I am not the most diligent of gardeners, providing the weather is good and the mood is upon me I enjoy working on the borders. It is especially satisfying at this point in the year when plants are coming through (and the weeds!). It is good to be re-acquainted with what is there and after a bit of work the improvement is marked. The added motivation is that I never know what I might dig up. As soon as the fork hits something solid I have to prise it out of the ground. These days it's usually a lump of sandstone but today, like Little Jack Horner I pulled out 'a plum'! (I think another lottery ticket is called for.) There's plenty left to do but it will have to wait as 'walking the dog' takes precedence.
Recently I bought a couple of delightful little books in 'the shop'. They are anthologies containing quotes from a variety of sources. I shall use them from time to time and for today I was amused by this one.
(Gardening) is not graceful, and it makes one hot; but it is a blessed sort of work, and if Eve had had a spade in Paradise and known what to do with it, we should not have had all that sad business of the apple.
