The White Buses
A statue outside the Norwegian Red Cross office in Oslo dedicated to the White Buses - a programme organised by the Swedish Red Cross and the Danish government in 1945 to rescue concentration camp inmates in areas under Nazi control and transport them to neutral Sweden. The buses were painted white with red crosses so they could not be identified as military vehicles. The programme was initially hailed as a success but in the 1990s it was criticised for rescuing mainly Scandinavians. In all 15,345 prisoners were rescued from the camps - 7795 were Scandinavian.
