Nellie McClung - Women are persons!!!
It is possible that not many of you have herd about Nellie (read here for more info) . The short version is that the BNA (British North American Act that 'created canada' gave women the vote but excluded them from government through a loose definition of 'persons'. Hence, if you read the wording on the scroll - "Women are Persons". Nellie and four other women (Henrietta Muir, Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby) launched the 'Persons Case' contending that women could be "qualified persons" and therefore be eligible to sit in the senate. The case was won on appeal.
Thankfully the HDR processing highlighted the text on the scroll (who knew) and as an election is looming (May 2nd) I caught a couple of lasses inspecting the statue (a facsimile of one in YOW)
