EASTER 1916

Today marks 95 years since the seven men on these stamps led the irish volunteers the irish citizens army and cumann na mban (irish womwns council) from liberty hall in dublin (beneath a banner with the legend 'we serve neither king nor kaiser but ireland) along the quays to the general post office where they barricaded themselves inside and climbed to the roof and removed the british union jack and replaced it with a green flag with the words 'irish republic' on and proclaimed such. this led to shelling from the river liffey by british troops told to put down the rebellion.they were finally captured and all executed, in turn it led to the irish civil war, partition and right up to the 'troubles'. these people are revered in ireland as heroes and patriots. today i will wear my commemorative lilly proudly and thank them for their sacrifice. cuimhnigh ar mharbh na h'eireann, caith lile na casca.
