An egg for Easter
The first day of the weeke, commeth Mary Magdalene earely when it was yet darke, vnto the Sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the Sepulchre.
John 20:1 (King James Bible of 1611)
The egg is an ancient pagan symbol of the rebirth of the Earth in celebration of the arrival of spring. Later, the early Christians adopted it as a symbol of the stone used to seal the tomb of Jesus and of his resurrection.
The empty tomb is often used as a symbol of Christian resurrection in funereal architecture. One of the most dramatic is the poet George Rodenbach bursting from his tomb in in the Cimetière du Père Lachaise in Paris
