Paisley (Renfrewshire Scotland)

A terrific day today Portygirl and I went to Paisley to visit the Coats Observatory (opened 1893).
As a nerdy teenager I spent endless hours using the telescope (a Grubb 10inch refracting telescope), a fascination for Astronomy that has stayed with me all my life.
The photo was taken from the balcony of the observatory showing some mill buildings that were part of Thomas Coats's empire (Coats Patons), he also built a museum, a library, swimming baths, and schools.
The mills largely employed young girls, the work being back breaking and dangerous (cuts were everyday hazards). The reason Paisley was chosen as the mill site was believed to be because of Paisley's high rainfall, the thread during the process had to be kept moist.
There is a proud statue of Coats in the heart of Paisley, but some day I hope that they will erect a statue to the "mill lassies" on the back of whom he became rich, and made Paisley a name associated with quality.
