Bynski's beech
On 27th April 1945 22 year old Canadian infantryman Charles Bynski was killed in action less than two weeks before the end of the war in Europe. In May of the previous year Charles, serving with the motorised infantry of the Lake Superior Regiment, had carved his name and home town on a beech tree deep in a Sussex wood. He is buried, along with almost 1,400 comrades in Holten Canadian War Cemetry in the Dutch province of Overijssel.
