Feijoa, pineapple guava, guavasteen, Acca sellowiana... any way you say it, the fruit won't be ready til late October at least. This plant is all over town, mostly as a durable street shrub; I haven't found very many people who like the green egg-shaped fruit, but I think it's delicious, skin and all. In a fit of domesticity and frugality I once made pineapple guava jam and chutney, but really I like it best just eaten right off the tree: sweet and tart at the same time. In the fall we'll have basketsful, but this is the first flower I've seen this year.
