Monument to the international community
I think that one of the techniques of survival which stood the people of Sarajevo in good stead during three years of siege in the 1990s was a sense of irony.
This 'monument' celebrating the often out of date cans of beef sent by foreign donors to the besieged city is a continuation of that trend - to see things through the prism of humour.
The inscription at the bottom says 'from the grateful citizens of Sarajevo'.
It's made a great antidote to the events in London today to be at a conference on 'accepting diversities' here in Sarajevo. Very glad we came.
