Iditarod 36, The Last Great Race on Earth
The ceremonial start of the 36th Iditarod Dog Race occurred today in Anchorage, Alaska.
It was only 16 degrees F. With a prominent breeze, the wind chill took the temperature to -5 degrees F.
96 dog sled teams with over 1000 sled dogs departed Anchorage today for Nome, over 1100 miles distance. It will take the mushers 10 to 17 days to reach Nome. The mushers will be tracked by snow machines and helicopters and a fleet of small aircraft to support the dog sled teams.
