Scaffolding
Working safely at height can be done in different ways. The most convenient way and also the safest way to do this is to erect scaffolding. For scaffolding, steel pipes and wooden planks are used. That is not always so; in the Far East you'll see a lot of construction sites with bamboo scaffolding, even at the highest skyscrapers under construction. Bamboo has hardly any disadvantages over steel, it is as strong as steel, much lighter as steel and probably cheaper than steel. In the shipping industry however it is not allowed, probably because of all the welding and cutting going on. Here you see a scaffolding erected on the stern of the Retriever, painters are using it and for the re-installation of the missing stern roller it will be used as well.
