Dolomites: Monte Piano
The Austro-Hungarians fought the Italians on this mountain for 18 months in WW1, from 1915-1917. It's steep-sided and flat-topped, with a narrower bit in the middle. The Austro-Hungarians occupied the northern part (Monte Piano), the Italians the southern (Monte Piana - I think I've got them the right way round). An estimated 14,000 soldiers died in the campaign - mostly in avalanches or just by falling off.
Today it's an open-air museum where you can see the trenches, gun emplacements, tunnels and barbed wire - along with a profusion of wild flowers and stunning views.
We got there up a steep narrow path, but near the top is a luxurious refuge - more of a mountain hotel - at the top of a road with a minibus shuttle.
