Procession of the Species 2011
Today was the eighth annual Bellingham Procession of the Species -- "a parade celebrating creativity, community, and our connection with nature". People dress in costumes representing creatures or plants, and process through town to Maritime Heritage Park to dance or just listen to the music.
There are only three simple rules for the procession:
No words, written or spoken.
No live animals.
No motorized vehicles.
Some of you with good memories might remember that I blipped last year's Procession.
The people in front of the razor clam are brandishing clam guns, which aren't guns at all. They're actually digging tools designed for catching the elusive clams. You can see a short video of one being used successfully here. It's a lot easier than trying to out-dig a clam with a shovel.
