High Water
Well, today was the day that playing with the gates was put into perspective today,
for today we faced the locks.....
Its amazing how many people are prepared to offer you information when you're toiling with lock gates and trying to remember the sequence of things to have to do to ensure that your boat doesn't capsize, your head isn't crushed by flying metal or your body is flattened against a lock wall......... apparently there is a name for these onlookers amongst the folk who live on the canal, and the name is Gongoozlers or something similar to that, its not neccessarily the word you may choose to use but its the more time honoured, more polite one, and also one which is in common parleyance even today.
A very smart, very elderly, very civilized gent got us out of a fix with some ropes at a lock and his first sentence began with " don't worry i'm not a gongoozler" and sorted out a very physical problem with experienced able hands, smiled, waved, and walked on!!!
Could get to like this!
