day 8 old & new
thanks so much for all your comments and encouragement! and thanks to berelaxed for the link to the article!! Nice how the old is becoming the new?
it's lovely to delve in the treasure trove of family history
what struck me reading through the letters my great granddad wrote to his daughter, and an auntie to her niece, is how deeply they cared for each others wellbeing.....they really are life lessons.........lessons in living from 1911, 1914 & 1924:
I treat you to some exerpts from a few:
do your best to stay humble?.that is such a blessing for yourself and for others?.
.....never be to busy to help others?.
.....and learn to be thrifty, it is so important for a girl who has to earn her bread?.
.....stay faithful to what you believe in..... and don't forget to thank God for his love and care....
....for children in extreme weakness there is a recipe for brandy tincture.... a mixture of brandy, cinnamon water, eggyolk & sugar....
The cursive handwriting is beautiful, and I think encourages one to think about what to write?..there's no delete button?.
It makes me wonder what life must have been like then....how folk felt about and were responsible for each other......how families were strong units......where values were passed on, where old age was not frowned upon and when respect was not a dirty word?..
Yep it was hard and tough, but maybe it all is a bit to easy now?.??
In contrast there is the email from a friend who [at 76] is learning to use email....it's a quick way to get in touch, but its' not a placer for heart-felt life lessons I think....
so have these got lost in the way we communicate with each other today?.. or are they no longer needed ....wanted....?
