a day off
It's nice to have a Friday off occasionally, even though today it was ostensibly to be there for the gas safety inspector. This is me lying around perusing a book of photos by Weegee, the photographer of 40s New York who famously tuned his radio to the police frequencies in order to reach gruesome crime scenes before they rolled up. I read an interesting thought of his recently: when he started out as a photographer he would turn up to fires and other similar disasters, and he quickly realised that no-one wants to look at pictures of burning buildings, but the really compelling images were of the people surrounding the event - firemen, people being rescued, onlookers. You could say he was something of a voyeur, but some of his images are truly unforgettable.
