Photo-a-day retirement

Cross legged, wind blown, spur winged plover

There were three plovers feeding in the grass by the side of the road where we bike. They dig their beaks right down into the sandy soil and fish out small worms etc.

They have a very loud raucous warning call and we had heard these ones earlier chasing off a harrier hawk who had strayed into their air space.

Terrible light, grey and raining. Now (afternoon) it's gloriously sunny.

In this pic you can see the spurs on the wing on the front edge - the spur is made of material similar to a cow's horn, and seems to be used when attacking to protect territory young etc but there seems to be little data about this.

The spur is not poisonous.
