Portrait of a Lady

This is Lois. Lois is 80 years old this year. She sits outside smoking a cigarette. She accepts my request to attempt a portrait of her, and doesn't pose. I like this. She tells me this is the worst place she's ever lived in. I ask her why, and she says she was kicked out of the last place for having a glass of wine. Who are we to deny her a glass?

Later, she asks if I'm married. When I say no, she replies, "Marry me and get me out of this place." She still has a sense of dry humour. She has 3 cigarettes while I'm outside, alternating between shade under a tree and a sunny bench. There is sadness in her eyes, and it brings sadness to mine.
