Another in my occassional series of historic sites around Darlington, this is Bulmer's Stone
The story goes that this large rock started off at Shap in Cumbria and was transported by a glacier to the present location on the A167, I assume long before roads were ever thought of!
The stone took its name from Willy Bulmer, the Borough Town Crier, who decided that the best position from which to read the contents of the newspapers to the local population was from the top of the stone.
In 1923 it was moved to the side of the building and put behind the raillings as it was deemed to be a traffic hazzard.
