Horfield Butts
Near the centre of the picture is a tump of earth. Around 1750 there were two tumps about 50 yards apart, between which there was a skittle alley. Known as Horfield Butts they were originally for use in archery practice..
Horfield Common was once notorious for its forest and was known as a lawless place. It's mentioned in the Doomsday book so was here before the local Tesco (currently being enlarged and modified to 'satisfy' customer demand for hot pies and Krispy Kreme outlets..).
It is, thankfully, no longer lawless although teenagers occasionally use it as their drinking venue of choice.
Golden Hill, next to the common, is so named due to pre-Christian people who used it as a beacon hill. As before, Tesco is now in the spot where you ideally would have placed the beacon.
No, I'm not especially anti-Tesco - just not a massive fan...
