The Shambles

No not the Shambles of York, but of Wetherby a town not far away. Met a friend for lunch so went a little earlier to seek out a blip. Wetherby is an old town on the original main route north, still keeping its market place, small roads and houses which are now shops.
This shot is just off the market square and is known as the Shambles. A plaque on the wall provides the following information.

The Shambles
Built in 1811 by the Duke of Devonshire for butchers shops, each was let for three guineas a year. In 1888 it was converted into an open market which sold poultry and dairy produce. At the beginning of the Great War these Shambles were used for miniature rifle practice.

Not sure what miniature rifle practice means; small rifles perhaps or firing at small things?

The word 'shambles' is (I think) a medieval name for butchers shops/slaughterhouse and such like.
