Hippos playing like kittens
The kid and I were at the Albuquerque Biopark today. We had been most everywhere she wanted except for the hippos, rhinos and snakes. We had headed up the African route and were watching the rhinos eat hay when we heard the most amazing racket. It sounded like someone was repeatedly driving a car into a sheet metal gate. We went around the corner expecting to find a keeper with a jammed gate, and instead found the kittens, er, hippos galloping around their exhibit chasing a large green ball in and out of the water. They were mouthing the ball and each other and rolling around (when they were in the water). I have never really seen these hippos move before, or for that matter really seen any hippos move vigorously before. The two were having a great time and then it was over and they trotted over to their hippo house to eat. It was quite the most amazing sight I have seen in a long time.
I give thanks for a day spent at the zoo with the granddaughter and that amazing sights still happen as I get older.
